IELTS or PTE: which is easier for Indian students in 2026?

Both IELTS and PTE test your English for study, work and migration. Neither is “easy”, but one usually suits you better. Here is a simple comparison to help you choose.

Choose IELTS if…

  • You feel more comfortable speaking to a real person than to a computer.
  • Your university or visa specifically asks for IELTS (or IELTS for UKVI).
  • You prefer writing by hand.

Choose PTE if…

  • You type comfortably and like computer-based tests.
  • You need results quickly for an application deadline.
  • Your universities and visa accept PTE (check this first).
Most important: before choosing, check the exact test (and version) your university, course and visa accept. For some UK visa routes you need a UKVI-approved test. We check this with you during counselling.

How long does preparation take?

With good basic English, most students need about 4–8 weeks of focused practice. If your speaking or writing is weaker, start with spoken English or grammar practice first; it saves money on repeat attempts.
